For thirty years, educators have come together at Teachers College for our summer institutes on the teaching of reading and writing. We offer two five-day institutes on the Teaching of Reading and two five-day institutes on the Teaching of Writing. The reading and writing institutes are taught back to back, first in June/July and then again in August.
The summer institutes are designed for educators, classroom teachers, school/district administrators, and curriculum specialists who are committed to turning classrooms into richly literate reading and writing workshops. Together with Project leaders and staff developers, participants study methods, plan curricula, revitalize their thinking, and create rigorous models of best practices. Each institute offers both "first year" and "advanced" strands of study, differentiating between participants who have never attended a summer institute before, “first year participants,” and returnees, or “advanced participants.” The summer institutes are also offered for graduate credit (CT 5800/CT 5850) through the Teachers College registrar. If you have any questions regarding graduate credit, please write to Dana House at dana@readingandwritingproject.com.
Our summer institutes attract people from all over the world and grow in numbers each year. More than 3,800 people attend these institutes each summer, and always, more people than we can accommodate apply. If you are interested in attending one or more of our institutes, we encourage you to apply early!
Many people ask us how we make our selections for the summer institutes, and the quick answer is that there is no absolute formula we follow. There are, however, certain guidelines we consider when making decisions.
