BPS Literacy Consultant Role and Qualifications
The primary role of the BPS Instructional Coach is to support the improvement of teaching strategies across the district. The Instructional Coach guides teachers in mastering the content of the MA Curriculum Frameworks for ELA & Literacy across the content areas. The Instructional Coach will use her knowledge of reading instruction to guide ELA and content area teachers to raise the quality of instruction thereby improving student achievement.
LEADERSHIP: • Research and provide content knowledge and resources to teachers and administrators about the best teaching strategies for teaching reading in the content areas. • Prepare literacy materials for use across content areas. • Assists in the development, delivery, and evaluation of an effective, year-round, district- wide, and school-based professional development program, including inquiry cycles, collaborative, coaching and learning cycles, e-learning, district and school based professional. • Collaborates with principals to identify school wide goals that align with district literacy initiatives to improve student achievement • Leads and manages school and district literacy data collection, disaggregation, and profiles in order to make instructional decisions and inform professional development. • Coaches teachers to develop effective strategies to implement literacy across the content areas. • Collaborates with Social Studies, Math and Science departments to support effective instructional strategies to access the content. • Informs the development and implementation of BPS literacy goals. • Assists school based leadership teams in examining student performance and quality of instruction to create goals to improve achievement school wide. • Exhibit knowledge of standards-based curriculum.
ACCOUNTABILITY: • Clearly defines outcomes for professional development and creates action plan in collaboration with school administrator for next steps for individual schools. • Monitors and ensures fidelity of BPS initiatives for ELA and literacy across the content areas through facilitation at school and grade-level professional development, as well as classroom observations. • Analyzes data for individual schools to match professional goals to student performance data. • Provides progress reports and information regarding the needs of school, teachers and implementation of district literacy initiatives. • Reviews and analyzes student data at the school level to monitor progress and inform school support from the district.
SUPPORT: • Establishes teacher learning communities where teachers feel comfortable to ask questions and try new strategies • Plans, collaborates and confers with teachers • Addresses teacher beliefs by providing critical feedback to teachers to identify areas for improvement to transform practice and improve student achievement

Supports the development and coordination of literacy initiatives, i.e., curriculum development, professional development opportunities, new literacy tools, assessments and benchmarks. Models and provides training on high quality literacy planning, instruction, and assessment aligned to MA ELA Curriculum Framework and BPS curriculum. Assists teachers with the administration of BPS assessments and the collection and analysis of data.

COMMUNICATION: • Collects data and provides feedback to the BPS Department of Literacy on the implementation of BPS literacy initiatives. • Communicates regularly with the Department of ELA and Literacy, school based administrators, teachers and other administrators as needed. • Maintains professional development on My Learning Plan. • Plans well organized professional development and presentations.
REQUIRED: • At least five years of successful teaching experience in reading or ELA. • Masters degree in education (Reading, ELA, ESL or Special Education). • Appropriate Massachusetts certification or licensure. • Ability to disaggregate, analyze, and interpret data. • Technology experience (i.e., on-line management system, e-mail, electronic presentation, word processing, webpage management or development). • Experience teaching literacy in the content areas. • Experience teaching/coaching adults in the area of literacy. • Capacity in the design, implementation, and evaluation of professional development. • Considerable knowledge of current research and developments in literacy. • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse groups of people. • Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills. • Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines.
EXPECTATIONS: • Participate in all district and state-sponsored professional development, including e- learning • Commit to maintaining fidelity to the BPS literacy initiatives design, content, texts and time commitment • Submit regular reports as determined by the Department of Literacy • Attend regularly scheduled department meetings and professional development sessions • Maintain a regular schedule, including some evenings, Saturdays, and days during the summer • Other duties as assigned by the ELA/Literacy and Curriculum Design Director
